The Power of Connection

Our adventure began with a simple desire to explore and immerse ourselves in the natural wonders of Norway's coastline.

Did you know that today is Earth Overshoot Day in Norway? On this day, as we confront the reality of our country's resource consumption surpassing what the Earth can renew, we at Sjøbris Adventure are prompted to reflect on our journey into the realms of adventure.

Guided by our unwavering belief in the transformative power of connection, we've witnessed firsthand how forging meaningful connections – to nature, community, and each other – can spark positive change and cultivate a profound sense of stewardship for our planet.

Our adventure began with a simple desire to explore and immerse ourselves in the natural wonders of Norway's coastline. As we embarked on thrilling expeditions and ventured into the depths of the wilderness, we were captivated not only by the beauty of our surroundings but also by the pressing need to safeguard and preserve them.

Encountering Earth Overshoot Day serve as a wake-up call, starkly reminding us of humanity's unsustainable consumption patterns and the urgent need for action. It is evident that our connection to the environment demanded more than mere appreciation; it necessitated active engagement and advocacy.

Recognizing the intersection of adventure and conservation, we seized the opportunity to merge our passion for outdoor exploration with a commitment to environmental stewardship. By harnessing the power of connection fostered through our experiences, we embarked on a mission to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and inspire others to join us in protecting our planet.

Through initiatives like beach clean-ups, educational programs, and community engagement efforts, we've witnessed the transformative impact of connection in empowering individuals to enact meaningful change. By nurturing a deeper sense of connection to nature and fostering a collective spirit of responsibility, we've laid the groundwork for a more sustainable future.

As we look ahead, we acknowledge the challenges that lie before us and the ongoing work required to address them. Yet, we remain hopeful. In the power of connection, we find the strength and resilience to overcome obstacles and create a better world for generations to come.

On this Earth Overshoot Day, we extend an invitation to join us in embracing the power of connection as a catalyst for positive change. Together, let us embark on a journey of adventure and conservation, united by the shared belief that what we connect with, we must also care for. For in the end, it is through connection that we find the inspiration and motivation to build a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

Exploring the Wisdom of Coastal Ever-Changing Weather

Growing up along the rugged coastline of Norway, I've witnessed firsthand the capricious whims of the weather, from serene calmness to ferocious storms that rage with unchecked fury.

From serene tranquility to tempestuous storms, the fluctuating elements offer profound insights into the timeless principles and inherent wisdom of the natural world.

As I sit by the window, watching the ever-changing tableau of the coast unfold before me, I'm struck by the sheer force and unpredictability of nature. Growing up along the rugged coastline of Norway, I've witnessed firsthand the capricious whims of the weather, from serene calmness to ferocious storms that rage with unchecked fury.

One particular memory stands out vividly in my mind: the morning of January 1, 1992. I awoke with a clenching feeling in my stomach, sensing that something was amiss. As I peered through the darkness, a strip of light from the hallway illuminated my bedroom door, and the howling wind outside sent shivers down my spine.

In an instant, chaos descended upon us. The entire house shook violently as the wind roared with relentless intensity. Glass shattered, and the Christmas tree in the living room crashed to the floor, a jumble of broken ornaments and splintered wood. It felt as though the very foundations of our world were being upended.

It wasn't until later that I learned the full extent of what had happened – the roof of our house had been torn off by the ferocious winds and hurled onto the roof and living room windows of our neighbors. In the aftermath of the storm, I couldn't help but reflect on the deeper wisdom inherent in nature's fury.

The coast, with its ever-changing weather patterns and rugged terrain, serves as a poignant reminder of the raw power and resilience of the natural world. But amidst the chaos and destruction, there is also a sense of renewal and rebirth. Just as the storm sweeps away the old and the worn, it also paves the way for new growth and transformation.

However, as I've grown older, I've also become acutely aware of the impact of human activity on the delicate balance of nature. Climate change has altered weather patterns and intensified the frequency and severity of storms. What was once considered a rare occurrence now seems to happen with alarming regularity.

In the face of these challenges, it's more important than ever to respect and protect the natural world. By reducing our carbon footprint, advocating for sustainable practices, and fostering a deeper connection with nature, we can work towards mitigating the effects of climate change and preserving the beauty and diversity of our planet for future generations.

As I gaze out at the coast, I'm filled with a sense of awe and reverence for the forces that shape our world. The changing weather, with its fierce storms and fleeting moments of calm, serves as a reminder of the fragility and beauty of life. And as I navigate the challenges that lie ahead, I take solace in the knowledge that, like the weather, I too possess the strength and resilience to weather any storm.

FUNFACT: Nyttårsorkanen

‘Nyttårsorkanen’ refers to a powerful storm that struck Norway on the early morning of January 1, 1992, marking the strongest measured storm on record to hit the Norwegian mainland. Primarily affecting the Møre, Trøndelag, and Helgeland regions, the hurricane unleashed winds reaching up to 65 m/s in brief gusts.

The storm caused extensive damage, impacting approximately 50,000 private properties and resulting in significant economic losses estimated at around 2 billion kroner. This figure excludes insurance deductibles and business interruptions.

In response to ‘Nyttårsorkanen’, Norway implemented enhanced systems for extreme weather alerts and disaster preparedness, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in mitigating the impact of severe weather events.

Embracing the Unknown

In the depths of winter's darkness, there lies an opportunity to confront our fears and embrace the unknown.

In the depths of winter's darkness, there lies an opportunity to confront our fears and embrace the unknown.

Inspired by Pieter Ampe's thought-provoking play "Get Lost," I've come to realize that our fear of the dark may not stem from its uncertainty but rather from the clarity it brings to our truths.

Growing up amidst the glow of city lights, I was never afraid of the darkness. Instead, I found solace in its quiet embrace, wandering through the streets with a sense of wonder and curiosity. But as I've grown older, I've come to understand that darkness isn't just the absence of light — it's a mirror that reflects the hidden depths of our souls.

In the winter darkness, when the world is blanketed in snow and the air is crisp, the impact of light pollution becomes apparent. Artificial glow obscures the stars, leaving us feeling disoriented and disconnected from the natural world. Yet, amidst the darkness, there is an opportunity to get lost in the beauty of the unknown.

Pieter Ampe's "Get Lost" invites us to embrace the uncertainty, to relinquish our need for control, and to surrender to the mysteries of the night. It's a humble push that challenges us to confront our fears, to question our truths, and to explore new depths of introspection and discovery.

As I navigate the winter darkness, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unknown. By allowing ourselves to get lost, we open ourselves up to new experiences, insights, and perspectives. In the depths of the unknown, we may just find the clarity and connection we've been searching for.

So let us not fear the darkness but instead, embrace it as an opportunity for growth and exploration. For it is in the darkness that we may find the light we've been seeking all along.

From Vikings to Vitality

Sauna culture in Norway has evolved over the centuries, from ancient traditions, potentially influenced by Viking practices, to the modern sauna culture that is a blend of tradition, wellness, and social interaction.

Norway's sauna culture has transitioned from ancient, potentially Viking-inspired practices to a modern and diverse culture that embraces wellness, social interaction, and a deep connection with nature. The sauna remains a symbol of relaxation, purification, and community in Norwegian society.

Viking Era

While there is limited direct evidence of Vikings using saunas, historical accounts suggest that Norse people had a strong emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene. The harsh Nordic climate may have led to the development of practices resembling sauna-like activities for warmth and purification.

Medieval and Renaissance Periods

Sauna-like structures continued to be used in rural Norway for bathing and cleansing. These were often simple, wood-fired structures with a focus on heat and steam.

19th Century

Sauna culture persisted in rural areas, and public bathhouses became more common in urban centers. These bathhouses were social spaces where people gathered for hygiene and socializing.

20th Century

The mid-20th century saw a decline in traditional sauna practices in urban areas, with the rise of modern plumbing and home bathrooms. However, sauna culture persisted in rural regions and summer cabins.

Late 20th Century

Sauna culture experienced a revival in the late 20th century, with an increased focus on wellness and leisure. Saunas became popular in spas, fitness centers, and private homes.

Modern Sauna Culture

Today, sauna culture in Norway is a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity.

Wellness and Health

Saunas are widely recognized for their health benefits, including improved circulation, relaxation, and detoxification. Many Norwegians incorporate regular sauna sessions into their wellness routines.

Social Interaction

Saunas remain social spaces. Public saunas, as well as those in private homes, are often shared with family and friends. Sauna gatherings contribute to a sense of community and relaxation.

Architectural Innovation

Modern sauna design in Norway emphasizes architectural innovation. Saunas are integrated into contemporary homes, hotels, and even public spaces with attention to aesthetics and functionality.

Nature Integration

Sauna experiences often involve a connection with nature. Outdoor saunas, particularly by bodies of water, allow for refreshing dips and a unique blend of hot and cold therapy.

Sustainability

There is a growing emphasis on sustainable sauna practices, with eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and a respect for nature.

The turning of light

The winter solstice, with its quiet splendor, whispers to us about the eternal dance between light and shadow, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of the cycles of life. This celestial event invites us to appreciate the beauty in transitions, both in nature and in our own lives.

The winter solstice, with its quiet splendor, whispers to us about the eternal dance between light and shadow, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of the cycles of life. This celestial event invites us to appreciate the beauty in transitions, both in nature and in our own lives.

During the winter solstice, the Earth's axial tilt positions the northern hemisphere farthest from the sun. In Norway, this results in the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun's angle in the sky reaches its lowest point, contributing to the winter chill as sunlight disperses over a larger area, providing less direct warmth.

The winter solstice marks the turning point in the celestial calendar. As Norway experiences the shortest day, it signals the beginning of a gradual transition towards longer days. This astronomical occurrence aligns with the natural rhythm of Earth's orbit, promising the return of increased daylight and the eventual arrival of spring.

The winter solstice carries with it a profound wisdom encapsulated in the turning of light. As the day reaches its shortest span and darkness prevails, it symbolizes a moment of introspection and reflection. It teaches us that even in the depths of winter, when the world appears dormant, there is a quiet, transformative power at play.

In the hushed stillness of the solstice, we find a reminder that the journey toward light and warmth begins in the embrace of darkness. It urges us to acknowledge and honor the shadows within ourselves, recognizing that they, too, play a crucial role in our personal growth and understanding.

The turning of light during the winter solstice signifies the cyclical nature of life, encouraging us to find hope and resilience in the face of challenges. Just as the sun begins its ascent after the solstice, we, too, have the capacity to emerge from periods of darkness with renewed strength and purpose.

This celestial event invites us to appreciate the beauty in transitions, both in nature and in our own lives. It carries the wisdom that, even in the coldest and darkest moments, there is an inherent potential for illumination and growth. The winter solstice, with its quiet splendor, whispers to us about the eternal dance between light and shadow, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of the cycles of life and the inherent wisdom embedded in the turning of light.

Autumn's qualities combine to create a season that is rich in sensory experiences, and a deep connection to nature. It's a time of transition and transformation, inviting us to appreciate the fleeting beauty of life and the world around us.

Vibrant Colors: One of the most iconic features of autumn is the transformation of tree leaves into a breathtaking display of colors. The landscape becomes a canvas painted with various shades of red, orange, and yellow. The sight of trees shedding their leaves in a vivid fashion is a mesmerizing spectacle.

Crisp Air: As summer's warmth gradually gives way to autumn, the air becomes refreshingly crisp. It's a relief from the heat of summer and a precursor to the chill of winter. The cool, invigorating breeze makes outdoor activities more enjoyable.

Harvest Season: Autumn is the time of bountiful harvests. Fields and orchards yield a plethora of crops, from pears and apples to potatoes and cabbage. This abundance plays a central role in the traditions and feasts of the season.

Cozy Comfort: The cooler temperatures of autumn inspire a sense of coziness. People eagerly don sweaters and scarves, sip on hot beverages like tea and lattes, and gather around crackling bonfires. The warm hues and comforting rituals foster a sense of well-being.

Falling Leaves: The gentle fall of leaves is a distinct auditory and visual experience in autumn. The rustling of leaves underfoot and the need for raking or simply enjoying a leisurely walk through a carpet of leaves are cherished autumn pastimes.

Longer Nights: With each passing day, autumn bestows longer, darker nights. This extended darkness invites stargazing and the chance to witness the gradual transition of constellations in the night sky.

Reflection and Transition: As the year approaches its end, autumn often inspires introspection. It's a time for contemplating the changes in nature and life, making plans for the future, and relishing the beauty of impermanence.

On a Clean-up mission

Beach clean-ups are one of the most important measures against marine litter, contributing both to taking care of nature and fauna.

Marine litter harms fish, seabirds and other animals, and is a major environmental problem. Our efforts in picking up litter on the coast make an important difference.

Beach clean-ups are one of the most important measures against marine litter, contributing both to taking care of nature and fauna,

Sjøbris Clean-up is a local initiative to make an effort on removing litter from our local beaches. We take part in national clean-up initiative and provide service for local companies, schools and organizations. We collaborate with local stakeholders, like Fjordane Friluftsråd and Naturvernforbundet Sogn og Fjordane. And we can help you plan and coordinate a successful execution of a clean-up operation:

  • Funding

  • Time and place, weather considering

  • Equipment

  • Activity

  • Waste management

  • Safety percations

Through an holistic concept we combine mindset, skills and activity in nature with the intention of creating deep, meaningful and lasting changes.

Activity in Nature

Creating conditions for deep integration and meaningful experiences through teambuilding, kayak, hiking, coasteering and yoga.

Careful Connection

Becoming aware of how the Self, the Moment and Nature work together as a whole

Mindful Movement

Physical exertion, the constantly changing nature and interaction with blue space engage the body and promote a sense of wellbeing

Mental Challenge

There’s the challenge of the unknown with each rocky outcropping that obscures the coastline. Strength is tested, heart pounding, adrenalin pumpin - Challenge accepted.

Vulnerable Landscapes, Cultural Heritage and Animal Welfare

Marine litter does not take into account protected areas, endangered species and natural diversity. Birds, animals, geology, vegetation, and landscape have inherent value, and must be treated with care and respect. Animals and birds are especially vulnerable during the nesting and breeding season in spring and summer.

Safety Procedures

We rely on Best practice for the clean-up of marine litter:

Beach Clean-up week is part of a national clean-up initiative, this year arranged from september 8th to 17th.

Other Keep Norway Beautiful campaigns: Spring Clean-up Day and City Clean-up Day.

The Coastal Lottery gives young and old an extra motivation to clean up the shoreline. They provide equipment, arrange for waste management, and by register you litter you can actually win a prize. “Kystplanken” is part of the costal lottery.

From the Sea of distraction to the Ocean’s edge of Norway

As part of our evolutionary heritage, human beings - both children and adults - have a profound need for time in wild, outdoor spaces.

As part of our evolutionary heritage, human beings - both children and adults - have a profound need for time in wild, outdoor spaces.

In this Virtual Age of overwelming tecnology we need more than ever to relate to the natural world. Richard Louv, the author of Last Child in the Woods & Nature Principles, coined the term “nature-deficit disorder” to describe the way children grow up deprived of wandering in muddy creeks. Reconnecting to the natural world is fundamental to human well-being, spirit, and survival - not only to children.

This summer we brought our two boys on an Adventure in Solund, at the ocean’s edge of Norway. Encompassing 1,700 islands, islets and skerries Solund archipelago is perfect for outdoor activities. In Hardbakke we rented kayaks at the local guidecompany Sognefjorden Active and headed for the ocean. With no WiFi and no electricity our primary intention was to plunge deeply into the wilderness without any disruptions.

Our first stop was Råkeneset, the westernmost cabin maintained by the Norwegian Trekking Assosiation (DNT), Ytre Sogn Turlag. Råkeneset is an 250 year old homestead protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. The walls of these buildings holds the story of the life of the farmer fisherman and invite you the enter the essence level of experience. This level host the deepest and subtlest feelings, visions and dreams of our ancestors and brings a sense of unity.

The next day the wind picked up so we changed our plan on visiting Lågøystolane. Beeing in nature demands better use of our senses, we need to look at the entire surroundings. We decided to paddle inshore, found a peaceful place to savour our lunch and for the boys to test their fishing luck. In the evening we went ashore at Litle Færøyna where we enjoyed the hospitality of local islander Roar.

Both Råkeneset and Litle Færøyna are a part of “Kystleden”, a unique offer for those seeking outdoor recreation along the coast. The intention of “Kystleden” is to convey coastal culture and provide good experiences with nature and outdoor life.

This is not to argue against the concept of tecnology. Nevertheless more and more people show symptoms of “nature-deficit-disorder”, overwelmed by the sea of distraction constructing our everyday life. Allowing yourself to go into the wilderness, reconnecting with the essence level of nature you can break the pattern. The more high -tech we become, the more nature we need.

Go on an Adventure - Unplug - Come back renewed.

Exploring the deeper landscapes of Måløy, for they are true holders of the wisdom of Patience and Robustness.

Our beloved hometown is often recognized by the peak of Mount Veten and Mount Brurahornet. As a litte girl I thought they looked like volcanos, and I kept having dreams of fleeing from lava erupting from the top of the mounatins. Little did I know that my nightmares were not that far fetched.

The solid foundation of mother earth was formed 1.8 billion years ago. Deep within this bedrock, Veten and Brurahornet were formed from Magma 1,6 billion years ago! Magma refers to molten rock trapped underground, if this molten rock makes it to the surface and keeps flowing like a liquid, it is called lava.

This type of rock is called Mangeritt, they are tremendiously solid and in a world context they are very rare. The rock came to the surface on the coast of Norway because of the rise and fall of the Caledoninan chain of Mountains 400-500 million years ago, in combination with erosions during the Iceage.

So the next time you are hiking in the mountains of Måløy keep in mind that you are truly walking on solid ground!

The Stories of Inner and Outer Landscapes

Harnessing the deeper truths, knowledge and potential of people, nature and life events to create meaning and change.

Harnessing the deeper truths, knowledge and potential of people, nature and life events to create meaning and change.

During the Ice Age, nature worked its magic carving the spectacular landscapes of Norway. The vast and spectacular fjords are only here today as result of the freezing chill of the Ice Age. When the coastline rose from the glaciation, human settlements sprung up on lands that had previously only been occupied by nature. Dramatic climate change set the stage for ecological and cultural evolution.

Our landscapes holds memories, myths and notions. Archaeologists have previously been aknowledning base of resource and communication as the main reason for the earliest costal settlements. But the traces from our ancestors also tells the story of belonging, trust and fundamental interactions with nature. It`s fair to say there are some hidden gems at the core of our landscapes.

Life is like moving through open landscapes, never knowing what comes next. There will be steep hills and rough terrain, storms and rainy days, as much as there will be clear paths, sunshine and magical sceneries. Each day is an adventure. The little things are just as important as the Big thing. The hard times are just as eligible as the happy times. Navigation asks of us to become aware of our inner and outer landscapes; Sensing, feeling and conscously choosing, and then - Just let it be. At the end of the day it`s out of your hands, every outcome is possible.
